In a quart canning jar, layer the following in this order:
  • 1/2 cup red lentils
  • 1/2 cup French lentils
  • 1/2 cup red lentils
  • 1/2 cup French lentils
  • 5 dried tomatoes
  • 1 dried chili pepper
  • 2 bay leaves
Top the above with the following, in a plastic bag:
  • 1.5 tsp curry powder
  • 2 tsp turmeric
Finally, top with a plastic bag containing:
  • 3/4 cup brown basmati or long-grain brown rice

Instructions
  1. Trim your jar with ribbon and include a card with the following recipe: Curried Lentil Soup 3 T butter 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 medium red onion, diced 8 cups water or broth, or a combination Jar of soup mix, minus the rice (cook separately) Heat butter in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add garlic and onion; saute 6 minutes. Add the contents of the spice bag, the bay leaves and chile pepper from the jar of soup mix and cook about 3 minutes. Add the rest of the soup mix and 8 cups water or light broth; simmer until the lentils are soft, about 1 hour. Season with salt. About half an hour before planning to serve the soup, prepare the rice. Bring 1.5 cups of water to a boil. Add to cold water and bring to a boil; add salt is you wish. Lower to a simmer for 20 – 25 minutes, or until water is absorbed and rice is tender. Serve soup over rice.
